Pet Photography FAQS - Tatiana Ortiz

How long have you been a professional photographer?

I’ve been shooting since I was 9 years old, and professionally for 15 years.

What kinds of pets do you photograph?

I love all critters. I mostly photograph dogs, cats and horses, but am always open to photographing other kinds as well. Let me know what you have in mind!

Why do you photograph pets?

From a young age I’ve had a special connection with animals. Pets have always been a part of my life. My passion is capturing their unique personality and unconditional love.

What is your availability for sessions?

I'm very flexible, and can work weekdays and weekends. Depending on the type of shoot, evenings are also an option. On location shoots typically require daylight, whereas studio shoots can be done anytime.

Where do your sessions take place?

I prefer to work where you and your pet are most comfortable. Usually that's your home or some other special, familiar place. I can also do sessions in my studio, as well as any other locations you have in mind.

I have multiple pets. How many pets can be in the photos?

Typically, I’ll photograph up to three pets/subjects per session. Additional subjects are welcome to join for an additional $25 each.

Can I be in the photographs?

Yes, absolutely! I think some of the most successful images are ones that capture the special connection between you and your loved ones. (Oh, did I mention I also photograph people?)

What is a typical session like?

It depends on the type of shoot. I do studio style portraits with backgrounds and lights, as well as candid shots on location. I will have met you and your pet(s) beforehand, so I'll already know what you want. I'll spend time getting set up, then will spend additional time with you and your pet(s) so everyone is comfortable and ready for a great shoot!

Are you really going to photograph my pet for three hours?

Typically I set a three-hour session to allow time for your pet to settle in and be comfortable with me and the process. Some pets get nervous when they meet someone new. The cameras, props and lights can also be distracting. If your pet is ready sooner than others, we'll get started and finish in less time. Whatever the case, it's important that we not rush.

How long does it take to get my photos?

Turnaround time for proofs is one week from the day of the shoot. I will provide you with a private, on-line gallery to view the proofs and make your selections.

What is an In-person ordering appointment like?

A slideshow presentation and in-person ordering is generally booked for one week from the day you receive the proofs. I’ll offer professional consultation on cropping and compare various layouts, as well as offer advice for scaling artwork for your home or business.

Is there any prep that I need to be aware of before the shoot?

A short walk prior to our session is a good idea, especially for dogs who have high energy. Have plenty of treats available, but please do not give your pet any until the session begins. Please bring or have available any toys, blankets, or clothing you’d like to include. I can assist in stylizing if you'd like. Grooming is also a good idea. A thorough brushing or grooming prior to our session will help make the images even better.

I would prefer to use clothing that has color. Stay away from any black clothing, as it tends to show a lot of pet hair. Also avoid any busy patterns, as they can confuse the camera sensor. Solid colors are always best. We can discuss this further during our pre-consult.

Location & Lighting:

Location depends on what you're interested in capturing. If your home has beautiful natural light, then that would be wonderful. If the location lacks light, I have professional lighting equipment. If we are doing studio-style photos, please have an area set aside for me to set up a backdrop and lights.

I’m interested in booking an appointment. How do we get started?

That’s great! I can’t wait to meet you and your loved one(s). You can call or text me at 424-644-5646, or you can email me at I will contact you to talk about what you'd like, and then we can set up a pre-consult meeting and book your photo session. Please always feel free to contact me with any questions!
